Living in Brooklyn Heights

Brooklyn Heights is a coveted riverfront enclave where the bustle of the city gives way to serene waterfront vistas. As New York City’s first historic district, Brooklyn Heights is a timeless neighborhood where gorgeous brownstone mansions and wood-frame row houses flank stately churches and carriage houses. Here, quiet, narrow streets are dotted by towering trees, and corner shop owners know their regular patrons by name.

Thanks to its position on a high bluff overlooking the East River — now bounded by Cadman Plaza to the east, Old Fulton Street to the north and Atlantic Avenue to the South — this area has been a coveted destination for centuries. The farms that covered the region in the 1600s gave way to country estates once regular ferry service was established in the 1800s, earning Brooklyn Heights the title of “America’s First Suburb.” The addition of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883 and subway access 15 years later were major catalysts for change. The wealthy decamped to lest congested locales. Mansions were subdivided into apartments and boarding houses, and the neighborhood began to attract artists and authors, including Truman Capote, Walt Whitman and Arthur Miller.

By the 1940s, construction of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway threatened to bisect Brooklyn Heights. Thankfully, the BQE was pushed along the western border and topped by Brooklyn Heights Promenade, which became a major destination thanks to its breathtaking views of the river and Manhattan skyline. The promenade has also earned starring roles in countless TV shows and films, including “Annie Hall,” “Moonstruck” and “Prizzi’s Honor.”

Brooklyn Bridge Park, which began development in 2010, is an 85 acre waterfront wonderland that stretches along the entire western border of Brooklyn Heights, offering playgrounds, sports fields, beaches, gardens and more.

Manhattan and the rest of the city within easy reach thanks to 2/3, R, 4/5, A/C and F subway trains and East River Ferry terminals at both the northern and southern border of this exceptional Brooklyn community.
