Storied Park Slope is a park-side haven offering an outstanding quality of life coupled with great dining and shopping.

Well-known for its family friendly atmosphere, Park Slope combines a free-spirited attitude with an upscale sensibility. Like most popular neighborhoods, the borders of Park Slope have become elastic over the years, and today, are generally defined as Flatbush Avenue to the north, Prospect Park West to the east, Fourth Avenue to the west, and either 15th Street or the Prospect Expressway to the south.

The epitome of “Brownstone Brooklyn,” the northern and eastern sections of Park Slope are blanketed by the largest designated historic district in the city. The area from Grand Army Plaza to 1st Street was dubbed the “Gold Coast” for its spectacular mansions. Nearby, stately prewar apartment buildings and bowfront townhouses give tree-lined streets a lively rhythm.

Towards South Slope and down the hill to the west, Italianate townhouses become more restrained in their decoration and wood frame row houses appear. The neighborhood’s borders, especially commercial Fourth Avenue, are flanked by newer developments and large apartment buildings.

The area now known as Park Slope remained relatively unpopulated through most of the 19th century until rail lines stretched eastward and 585-acre Prospect Park was completed in 1873. Designed by Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted, this undisputed jewel of the neighborhood features abundant bucolic splendor alongside wonderful recreation and entertainment, including a skating rink, the bandshell, carousel, zoo and more. The revered Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Central Library and Museum, are found on the park’s northeastern reaches. Prospect Park features two year-round greenmarkets. The restaurant rows along 5th and 7th avenues and the nearly 50-year-old Park Slope Food Co-op round out the neighborhood’s foodie appeal.
